Swoop to lay off 18 Edmonton-based workers after federal government cancels flights to Mexico, Caribbean countries

Calgary-based ultra-low-cost airline Swoop will be laying off 36 workers including 18 in Edmonton following the cancellation of flights to Mexico and the Caribbean.

Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 4070 said in an email Monday that the layoffs will start effective Feb. 16. The remaining 18 other layoff notices impact workers in Ontario. In the email, the union says the layoffs are because of the federal government’s request to cancel flights to the sun-kissed destinations.

The government made the announcement on Jan 29 in order to limit the spread of COVID-19 and the variants of the virus into Canada. In addition, international travellers will be funnelled to airports in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.

The new restrictions are anticipated to be in place until April 30.
