Hundreds of shoppers waited in line for the chance to shop at H-Mart on its grand opening Thursday.

The popular Asian supermarket’s first Edmonton location is popping up where a Whole Foods was intended to open until it and a Calgary location were cancelled without explanation in 2017.

But it appears that H-Mart, which specializes in Korean food and products, is a welcome addition to the commercial and shopping area South Park Centre on Calgary Trail. Even hours after opening Thursday morning, there was a line hundreds-long out the door and down the sidewalk.

“With a growing population, the area around South Park Centre was long underserved in grocery preferences and necessities,” said Dave Hennessey, director of leasing for developer First Capital Realty, on Friday. “H-Mart is the type of specialty food market Edmontonians wanted close to home and on the way to and from work.”

One disgruntled customer even gave up waiting but vowed to come back once it had settled down.

H-Mart, which also has locations in Vancouver and Toronto, says it plans to open more locations in Edmonton in the future.
