An Edmonton-based company considered one of the largest private sector liquor retailers in Canada has reached an agreement to exclusively build and operate cannabis retail outlets under the Aurora brand when recreational cannabis becomes legal across Canada later this year.

Alcanna, which has 229 liquor retail outlets in Western Canada and Alaska, has partnered with Alberta’s leading cannabis company, Aurora Cannabis Inc., and will use its “well-established retailing infrastructure and expertise” to build the retail outlets.

The companies expect to open 37 stores starting Oct. 17, “the maximum number permitted to a single operator under provincial regulations in year one of legalized adult consumer use.”

Alcanna is currently converting several of its existing liquor stores into cannabis retail outlets, the company said Wednesday. Alcanna stores in Alberta operate under the brand names Wine and Beyond, Deep Discount Liquor and Liquor Depot.
