In Edmonton City, Palace Casino is known as one of the longest running casinos. Palace Casino started with an area of more than 10,000 square feet in April 1990 and is owned by 69 charities. It was then managed by the former construction industry executive Howard Worrell when it started. He sold the establishment in September 2000 to Gateway Casinos Income Fund.
The Gateway Casino Income Fund now owns The Palace Casino and is headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia. Gateway Casinos Income Fund is acclaimed to be one of the largest casino operators in Western Canada until today. The Fund provides management services to Gateway Casinos Inc. and also manages 7 casinos in British Columbia and Alberta.
The Palace Casino is located inside the 5.2 million square-foot West Edmonton Mall, one of the world’s biggest entertainments centers and shopping malls. In order to meet the demands of the costumers, in August 2001, the casino underwent a 36,000-square foot expansion and renovation of the casino, which cost about $12M. After the construction and renovation, the casino now covers a total area of 66,000 square feet on two levels. It has an art deco theme and has added six hand-painted murals as part of its decor.
Palace Casino offers a high limit gaming area that includes 31 tables with a lounge. To offer services at anytime to its clients and to let its profit flourish, a 24-hour daily private poker room is provided with seven tables along with 706 slot machines. Clients can also dine in the casino’s full-service steak house – Booker’s Steak and Prime Rib. Another restaurant that casino patrons can go to after an exciting day at the poker rooms is Martuni’s Lounge and Deli.
